Turning Your Garage Into the Perfect Home Gym

July 23, 2019

Do you love to workout but hate the gym? Are you motivated to start exercising but don't have a gym close enough to you? Well you can turn your garage into an awesome home gym that lets you take care of your workouts right from home and even creates a place for the whole family to get motivated! To get you started, here are a few steps to take to build your garage home gym!

  1. Make an assessment of how much space you are willing or able to use. Some people are fine with parking the car on the driveway or on the street and can dedicate the entire garage for a gym space. Some people already have space taken up by storage so only a section of the room is free. See how much space you could free up by investing in better storage and organization and getting things off the ground and up on shelves or hooks. When you know how much space you have, you can start to plan which equipment is worth investing in.
  2. Figure out what kind of workouts you plan on doing. Are you mostly wanting to do cardio and just need a treadmill or stationary bike? Are you focused exclusively on weight training? Either way, start to research the equipment you need. If you need more equipment than a cardio machine, a great place to start is with a rack of dumbbells, a bench, a kettle bell, some resistance bands, a jump rope, and maybe an exercise ball.
  3. If you are a more advanced weightlifter, you can actually build your very own squat rack in the garage. If you are confident in your DIY abilities and have the right tools, you can buy wood support beams, steel ties, and wood screws and build it yourself. If not, you can buy pretty affordable squat rack gear online.
  4. Before you bring in all the equipment, you have to prepare the space. It's worth investing in some floor mats to protect the garage floor from scuffs and cracks, absorb the sound of weights being dropped, and for injury prevention. Floor mats will give you more traction and prevent slips, reduce body impact and shock to your joints, and even help prevent injuries and joint pain over time.
  5. Make sure you have a way to keep your home gym cool and comfortable. Airflow is important in your home gym to prevent overheating. If your garage doesn't have air conditioning, it might be worth buying a portable AC unit or an oscillating fan. You'll be happy you did when you can workout harder and longer because you don't need to stop from overheating and needing fresh air.
